Medical procedure safety and laser tattoo removal

A very common question asked at Inkfree, MD relates to medical procedure safety and laser tattoo removal. Essentially whether or not it is safe to have laser tattoo removal treatments while undergoing other medical procedures. These procedures may vary from minor cosmetic treatments such as laser hair removal to more invasive surgeries including gall bladder removal and even mastectomy. The lasers used during laser tattoo removal treat the ink that is in the dermis. This is the superficial layer of skin. Once the ink has been targeted by the laser it is broken up into microscopic particles that are gradually cleared by your immune system.

There are only three big contraindications to having laser tattoo removal. The first is a burn or other open wound or lesion at the site of the removal. We obviously would not want to apply intense heat to skin that was already damaged. The second is a known allergic reaction to tattoo ink. Although rare, some people do have an intense allergic rash when a tattoo is applied. This happens most commonly with red ink. The same […]

PCOS and Laser Hair Removal

PCOS and Laser Hair Removal

PCOS is Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, also known as Stein-Leventhal Syndrome, and is one of the most common hormonal disorders in women. PCOS cannot be diagnosed with one test alone and symptoms vary from woman to woman. The most common symptoms are multiple cysts on the ovaries, weight gain and obesity, acne and hirsutism (excessive hair growth, often in a male pattern). Early diagnosis of PCOS is important as it has been linked to an increased risk for developing several medical problems including insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and heart disease.

Normally, the ovaries make a tiny amount of male sex hormones (androgens). In PCOS, they start making slightly more androgens. This may cause you to stop ovulating, get acne, and grow extra facial and body hair. This high level of testosterone can also prevent the ovaries from releasing an egg each month. Excessive facial and body hair growth is one of the characteristic features of polycystic ovarian syndrome that can lead to high levels of depression and anxiety.

Tattoo regret – How to deal with it and move forward

Tattoo regret – How to deal with it and move forward

Tattoo regret is a very common thing. Statistics show that approximately one in three Americans has a tattoo and almost a third of those have tattoo regret. Every day, we receive a phone call or a desperate email from someone who either had a botched ink job or is completely sure they’ve made the worst decision of their life. At Inkfree, MD we have built a successful and respected practice of helping people to remove the mistakes of their youth or bad relationships with some of the most advanced laser protocols available.

So what do you do if you’ve just gotten a tattoo and immediately realize you’ve made a mistake? If you are sure that you want it removed, the next step would be to consult a professional to discuss your options. After that, you will have to live with your mistake for 4-6 weeks until your skin is totally healed. It’s OK, the world will not end. Luckily brand new tattoos are generally easier to remove as it takes a while for […]

Does laser tattoo removal work on dark skin?

Does laser tattoo removal work on dark skin?

Question: Does laser tattoo removal work on dark skin? Answer: Whether or not laser tattoo removal can be done on dark skin is a very common question. Not all clinics are created equal, so it’s very important to ask a few basic questions before seeking treatment. At Inkfree, MD we have successfully treated many dark skinned patients at our Houston clinic. Our answer is definitely yes, but it is imperative that a few guidelines are followed.

Most important is the proper use of a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser. This laser uses a broad wavelength of light. It will target the tattoo ink while not removing the melanin (pigment) in dark skin which can lead to hypopigmentation. Another important consideration in doing laser tattoo removal on dark skin is the time span between treatments. While some of our Houston based competitors will perform treatments every four weeks, we have found that this almost always leads to damaging hypopigmentation and scarring. We recommend waiting at least 6-8 weeks in between treatments to allow […]

Marine Corps Tattoo Removal – New Regulations

Marine Corps Tattoo Removal – New Regulations

Many of our laser tattoo removal patients are young men and women who desire to enlist in the armed services. While each branch has its own specific regulations, earlier in the year the United States Marine Corps updated their tattoo policy seeking “to balance the personal desires of Marines with high standards of professional military appearance and heritage,” according to a statement posted on its website. This new policy has spawned new Marine Corps tattoo removal requirements.

To avoid any misinterpretation, the Marine Corps published a detailed illustration with designated red zones where tattoos are not allowed and a 12-page set of rules which includes the following general guidelines:

  1. Marines can have an unlimited number of tattoos that are covered by their “physical training uniform,” which consists of a green t-shirt and shorts. But it bans tattoos on the head, neck, inside of the mouth, wrists, knees, elbows, and hands. The only exception to that is a single band tattoo of no more than three-eighths of an inch in width is permitted on one finger. […]

Laser tattoo removal – how many treatments will I need?

Laser tattoo removal – how many treatments will I need?

So you’re tired of looking at that fading blur on your ankle. Was it a dolphin, a tribal mark, maybe someone’s name? Even if you can’t remember why you decided to get “inked”, deciding to start laser tattoo removal treatments is a big deal so congrats! One of the biggest questions people ask us is “how many treatments it will take?”.

General guidelines are between 5-15 treatments but here is no one right answer as every tattoo is as unique as a snowflake.

Here are some general guidelines:

  • INK COLOR: Typically green, blue, and black inks are easier to remove, while red, orange, yellow, and white inks are progressively more challenging. Removing the more difficult colors requires technology using multiple laser wavelengths. At Inkfree, MD we have not one but two different lasers which can target ALL ink colors.
  • TATTOO AGE: Older tattoos are prone to pigment fading and may be more easily removed compared to newer tattoos.
  • SMOKING: Those who smoked regularly will need more treatments compared to their non-smoking counterparts. This lower success […]

Top 5 reasons to start laser hair removal this Fall

Top 5 reasons to start laser hair removal this Fall

  1. Timing is Everything

Most people start thinking about looking great in their swimsuits in the spring before spring break trips or summer plans. Looking great in that tiny bikini means no razor burn or ingrown hairs. However, this is the WORST time to start the laser hair removal process unless you are someone that avoids the sun and tanning beds like the plague! The best time to start considering laser hair removal is in the FALL when your summer tan has faded away. It takes approximately 10 months to complete a 6 treatment package, so planning for almost a year of no sun exposure is very hard for some people.

  2. Don’t Show off Red, Irritated Skin

After you undergo laser hair removal, you can expect your skin to be a bit irritated. A lot of patients experience a feeling like having a sunburn after a laser session, and there can be some minor swelling. In the Fall, you can avoid showing off the after effects of treatment on your legs or arms.

  3. The […]

Is tattoo ink harmful to your health?

Is tattoo ink harmful to your health? – A far cry from their tribal predecessors made with dyes from the natural environment, many of today’s tattoos contain an unknown conglomeration of metallic salts, organic dyes or plastics suspended in a carrier solution for consistency of application. Without full disclosure of ingredients, it is impossible to know for sure what is in tattoo ink. Added to this, each color and each brand of ink has completely different ingredients, according to a 2005 study from Northern Arizona University.

In a recent European Commission’s report on the health risks of tattooing, they note that close to 40% of organic colorants used in permanent tattoos in Europe are not even approved for use on the skin as a cosmetic ingredient and just under 20% of the colorants studied contained a carcinogenic aromatic amine. Many of the chemicals found were originally intended for use in writing and printer inks, as well as automobile paints. These inks are injected deep enough into the skin that often tattoos will not even be destroyed by severe burns.

European countries such as Germany, […]

Does apple cider vinegar remove skin tags?

There are many skin tag removal methods available and many of them claim to be safe and effective at home. Skin tags are typically small, skin-colored, harmless growths that hang down like protruding flaps of skin from the body, by a stalk. They are commonly found in overweight and elderly people and on people suffering from diabetes. Even though the cause for these lesions still remains a mystery, doctors assure that they are benign and harmless.

There are claims that common household products such as apple cider vinegar “work miracles” on skin tags and moles. Many of its supposed benefits are unproven, but some still think that adding a little of this sour liquid to your life may have some health benefits. Even celebrities everywhere are hopping on the bandwagon of washing with apple cider vinegar, promising everything from acne-free skin to effective dandruff relief. Unfortunately, others have taken it too far by claiming it removes skin tags safely and completely.  The purported claim is that the acid in the vinegar destroys the tissue that causes the stalk without damaging the surrounding skin […]
