PCOS and Laser Hair Removal

PCOS and Laser Hair Removal

PCOS is Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, also known as Stein-Leventhal Syndrome, and is one of the most common hormonal disorders in women. PCOS cannot be diagnosed with one test alone and symptoms vary from woman to woman. The most common symptoms are multiple cysts on the ovaries, weight gain and obesity, acne and hirsutism (excessive hair growth, often in a male pattern). Early diagnosis of PCOS is important as it has been linked to an increased risk for developing several medical problems including insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and heart disease.

Normally, the ovaries make a tiny amount of male sex hormones (androgens). In PCOS, they start making slightly more androgens. This may cause you to stop ovulating, get acne, and grow extra facial and body hair. This high level of testosterone can also prevent the ovaries from releasing an egg each month. Excessive facial and body hair growth is one of the characteristic features of polycystic ovarian syndrome that can lead to high levels of depression and anxiety.

Top 5 reasons to start laser hair removal this Fall

Top 5 reasons to start laser hair removal this Fall

  1. Timing is Everything

Most people start thinking about looking great in their swimsuits in the spring before spring break trips or summer plans. Looking great in that tiny bikini means no razor burn or ingrown hairs. However, this is the WORST time to start the laser hair removal process unless you are someone that avoids the sun and tanning beds like the plague! The best time to start considering laser hair removal is in the FALL when your summer tan has faded away. It takes approximately 10 months to complete a 6 treatment package, so planning for almost a year of no sun exposure is very hard for some people.

  2. Don’t Show off Red, Irritated Skin

After you undergo laser hair removal, you can expect your skin to be a bit irritated. A lot of patients experience a feeling like having a sunburn after a laser session, and there can be some minor swelling. In the Fall, you can avoid showing off the after effects of treatment on your legs or arms.

  3. The […]

Will laser hair removal save me money?

The short answer is YES! Laser hair removal will result in significant savings over the long run compared to the cost of other hair removal methods. Have you ever calculated the amount of time and money you spend on razors, waxing, threading, or electrolysis? Over the course of your lifetime, that amount is staggering.

Let’s analyze the cost of razors for instance. The price for a typical pack of razors ranges anywhere from $2.50 to $15.00, and sometimes that cost is even higher. The average person would spend this amount per month on razors. The total is $30.00 a year for the least expensive razors to $180.00 for the higher end versions. Now calculate this amount over an entire lifetime plus the time-consuming process of actually shaving!

Most people would agree that this amount would far exceed a package of laser hair removal treatments at a reputable medical spa or laser clinic. At Inkfree, MD, we offer packages of six laser hair removal sessions for as low $119. Although laser hair removal does not eliminate every single hair, most people experience 80%-90% permanent hair […]

Where Can I Find Affordable Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal is an extremely popular procedure that benefits millions of consumers every year. Unfortunately the typical high costs associated with these treatments, makes it simply out of reach for many people. Laser hair removal services are priced differently depending on the facility and where you live. Many medical spas charge thousands and thousands of dollars for a package of six treatments on larger parts of the body. Other places charge exorbitant monthly fees to become a member of their “laser hair removal club.” Forget it!

At Inkfree, MD we believe that laser hair removal treatments should be available for everyone seeking to improve their appearance and to feel better both inside and out. For instance, while some places charge $2000 for a package of 6 on a large area, we only charge $299! How is this possible? Inkfree, MD is not a typical “med spa” and we do not push expensive or unnecessary packages to our clients. Our primary focus is delivering safe, effective and affordable laser skin treatments for men and women of all skin types. Don’t overpay any longer […]

Does laser hair removal work on gray hair?

Laser hair removal is the best way to remove unwanted hair on any part of your body. As summer approaches, now is the perfect time to start these life-changing treatments that will boost your confidence and overall appearance. The laser works by targeting melanin, the pigment in our hair follicles. The light is focused on the follicle of the growing hairs, which is heated and destroyed. This is done without harming the epidermis or the top layer of the skin.

Although laser hair removal can be done on all skin types, it is not effective on all hair types. The laser works best when there is a contrast between the hair color and the skin color. Lighter skinned people with red, blond or white hair will not achieve dramatic results because there is very little pigment in the hair follicle. Conversely, dark skin and dark haired individuals, as well as lighter skinned individuals with darker hair will get excellent and often dramatic results.

Why can’t I tan during laser hair removal?

Why can’t I tan during laser hair removal?

It’s not entirely true. You can tan during laser hair removal but with several caveats. Tanning increases the melanin in the skin. The laser is attracted to melanin, so if the skin has increased melanin it’s difficult for the laser to distinguish between hair and skin. Tanning can also cause complications such as burning or discoloration of the skin as well as sun bleaching hair which is not desired as laser hair removal still isn’t effective on gray, blonde or red hair.

The advanced laser technology used at Inkfree, MD has settings that allow technicians to more easily treat darker skin types. It is possible to tan and still receive laser hair removal. However, because the color of the skin is closer to the color of the pigment, the laser’s settings cannot be as aggressive as they would be if you didn’t tan.

That means you’ll probably need to schedule more sessions to ensure all hair is completely removed. Also, some body parts receive more sun exposure than others, such as the arms and neck, so the […]

Hair gone after 6 laser hair removal treatments?

Laser hair removal is the most effective way of removing unwanted hair. It works by the laser light targeting the pigment in the hair follicle, which is destroyed by the intense heat of the laser. By using highly specific settings, customized to your skin and hair type, the laser is able to destroy the follicle permanently and prevent further hair growth. Generally, it takes 6 treatments to receive permanent results, but there are various factors that would impact this number. Some people, for instance experience permanent hair removal after just 2-3 treatments with us. For most, if you receive the recommended number of treatments for your skin and hair type, you can expect to achieve 80% to 90% permanent hair reduction. However, there is always the chance that hairs which may have been dormant during your laser treatment will begin to grow. Additionally, hormone changes with time or changes in health or medications may affect hair growth. Finally, if you tweeze, wax, thread or pluck your hair in between treatments, it disturbs the hair growth cycle and causes the laser hair removal […]

Is it safe to get laser hair removal in the summer?

As the summer rapidly approaches, everyone is looking to get beach body ready. As a result, laser hair removal becomes a very popular part of people’s beauty regime. Many worry however, if it’s safe to get laser hair removal treatments during the summer due to more intense sun exposure. The general answer is yes, it’s completely safe to get laser hair removal during the hot months if you follow some general guidelines.

Inkfree, MD’s advanced laser technology uses precise wavelengths that target the pigment in the hair follicle while avoiding damage to the surrounding skin. When most people are tan in the summer, the laser is able to selectively target just the melanin pigments while avoiding the skin. That being said, you should NEVER receive laser hair removal treatments if you’ve been out in the sun 72 hours prior, or you risk burning or scarring the skin. As a general rule, it is always good to avoid sun exposure before your laser treatment and to apply sunscreen daily. Because we are physician owned and operated, our patient’s safety is our top concern.

The Hair Growth Cycle Explained

Many patients ask why they have to wait so many weeks in between each laser hair removal session. We get this question often from our patients at Inkfree, MD. Generally it is best to wait anywhere from 4 to 8 weeks in between treatments, with most averaging around 6 weeks. The specific timing depends on various factors, such as, the quality of treatment you receive, the area to be treated, your specific skin type and the particular hair growth cycle you are in.

There are three main phases in a hair’s life cycle:

  1. Anagen Phase (the active growth phase)
During this phase, the hair grows rapidly and contains an abundance of melanin which absorbs light. The hair growth in this phase lasts for a period of 1 to 6 weeks. The laser treats the Anagen hair.
  2. Catagen Phase (transitional period)
This phase lasts for a period of 2 weeks. This is the end of the growth phase and is marked by changes in the hair follicle. The hair stops growing and the hair follicle separates from the base, forming club hair.
