PCOS and Laser Hair Removal

PCOS is Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, also known as Stein-Leventhal Syndrome, and is one of the most common hormonal disorders in women. PCOS cannot be diagnosed with one test alone and symptoms vary from woman to woman. The most common symptoms are multiple cysts on the ovaries, weight gain and obesity, acne and hirsutism (excessive hair growth, often in a male pattern). Early diagnosis of PCOS is important as it has been linked to an increased risk for developing several medical problems including insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and heart disease.

Normally, the ovaries make a tiny amount of male sex hormones (androgens). In PCOS, they start making slightly more androgens. This may cause you to stop ovulating, get acne, and grow extra facial and body hair. This high level of testosterone can also prevent the ovaries from releasing an egg each month. Excessive facial and body hair growth is one of the characteristic features of polycystic ovarian syndrome that can lead to high levels of depression and anxiety.

Will laser hair removal save me money?

The short answer is YES! Laser hair removal will result in significant savings over the long run compared to the cost of other hair removal methods. Have you ever calculated the amount of time and money you spend on razors, waxing, threading, or electrolysis? Over the course of your lifetime, that amount is staggering.

Let’s analyze the cost of razors for instance. The price for a typical pack of razors ranges anywhere from $2.50 to $15.00, and sometimes that cost is even higher. The average person would spend this amount per month on razors. The total is $30.00 a year for the least expensive razors to $180.00 for the higher end versions. Now calculate this amount over an entire lifetime plus the time-consuming process of actually shaving!

Most people would agree that this amount would far exceed a package of laser hair removal treatments at a reputable medical spa or laser clinic. At Inkfree, MD, we offer packages of six laser hair removal sessions for as low $119. Although laser hair removal does not eliminate every single hair, most people experience 80%-90% permanent hair […]

Hair gone after 6 laser hair removal treatments?

Laser hair removal is the most effective way of removing unwanted hair. It works by the laser light targeting the pigment in the hair follicle, which is destroyed by the intense heat of the laser. By using highly specific settings, customized to your skin and hair type, the laser is able to destroy the follicle permanently and prevent further hair growth. Generally, it takes 6 treatments to receive permanent results, but there are various factors that would impact this number. Some people, for instance experience permanent hair removal after just 2-3 treatments with us. For most, if you receive the recommended number of treatments for your skin and hair type, you can expect to achieve 80% to 90% permanent hair reduction. However, there is always the chance that hairs which may have been dormant during your laser treatment will begin to grow. Additionally, hormone changes with time or changes in health or medications may affect hair growth. Finally, if you tweeze, wax, thread or pluck your hair in between treatments, it disturbs the hair growth cycle and causes the laser hair removal […]

The Hair Growth Cycle Explained

Many patients ask why they have to wait so many weeks in between each laser hair removal session. We get this question often from our patients at Inkfree, MD. Generally it is best to wait anywhere from 4 to 8 weeks in between treatments, with most averaging around 6 weeks. The specific timing depends on various factors, such as, the quality of treatment you receive, the area to be treated, your specific skin type and the particular hair growth cycle you are in.

There are three main phases in a hair’s life cycle:

  1. Anagen Phase (the active growth phase)
During this phase, the hair grows rapidly and contains an abundance of melanin which absorbs light. The hair growth in this phase lasts for a period of 1 to 6 weeks. The laser treats the Anagen hair.
  2. Catagen Phase (transitional period)
This phase lasts for a period of 2 weeks. This is the end of the growth phase and is marked by changes in the hair follicle. The hair stops growing and the hair follicle separates from the base, forming club hair.
